What is YOUR fight song?
The song that makes you laugh, or cry, or just have a good time. Whether you’re doing homework, taking the bus home, or bored out of your mind, everyone has one song that gets them to keep pushing forward.
What is that song for you?
In responding to a Hoofbeat survey, Northside students shared that their fight song pumps them up and gives them energy to push through whatever hardships they’re enduring.

Senior Dhriti Patel’s fight song is “That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars, saying, “It boosts my mood every time I listen to it, no matter how I might be feeling. Even if I’m feeling horrible, it makes me want to dance and chillax despite it all. It’s a banger!”

Sophomore Eithar Ahmed, whose fight song is “Baby Shark” by Pinkfong, says, “Even though it’s silly, it always boosts my mood no matter what. When I’m stressed or tired, it’s impossible not to smile when it comes on. It reminds me not to take everything so seriously and to find joy in small, funny things.”
Other students express how their fight song is associated with a ritual or experience they’ve had in their lifetime.

Junior Evelyn McGregor shares about her fight song, “Close To You” by Gracie Abrams, stating “I have a tradition of listening to it on every flight I take, especially during landing.” This routine helps her connect to her fight song, creating a bond that goes beyond just liking a song.

Freshman Chiquinquira Hernandez’s fight song is “Rude” by Magic. She says, “No matter what, the song is always there so I can jam to it. I’ve been through so many things while listening to this song.”
Other students share that they feel a deep sense of empathy and relatability with their fight songs, which helps them stand out and become their fight song. Sophomore Asa Levine shares this sentiment about his fight song “Awkward Always” by the Suicide Machines, saying, “It feels like something I could relate to.”
In addition to explaining their fight song selections, students were asked what they think makes a good fight song.

Many believe an upbeat, fun song is the perfect choice. For example, freshman Safa Mohammed, whose fight song is “Means I Care” by Tate McRae, and sophomore Carlos Hernandez, whose fight song is “Megalovania” by Toby Fox.
Safa states that a good fight song “has a good beat and lyrics you like,” and Carlos says the best choices are “something that has spikes of a rhythm that makes me want to jump.”

Other students share different perspectives on what makes a good fight song. Freshman Kaja Lin, whose fight song is “Capriccio Espagnol” by Rimsky Korsakov, stated “a good fight song is one that is fun to listen to and is unique enough that it is distinctive.” A sophomore, whose fight song is “Most Girls” by Hailee Steinfeld. She believes a good fight song “encourages (her) to do anything, especially when (she’s) tired.”
Everyone listens to music differently and feels empowered by different types of music. Everyone has a different method to find the song that they can put on at any given moment to boost their moods, help them relax, or just pump them up. No matter what you like about music, you have a song that becomes yours: your fight song.
