To honor students’ achievements, Northside, like many other high schools across the country, is home to honor society chapters. In total, Northside has 10 honor societies: National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Theatre Honor Society, Tri M Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and language honor societies for French, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and Latin.
Northside’s Theatre Honor Society chapter is one of this year’s renewed honor societies. President Avery Soellner revived the Theatre Honor Society in order to foster a more serious devotion to NCP theatre, provide scholarship opportunities to students, and to fundraise for the theatre department.
Fundraising can be particularly important because Northside’s theatre program requires materials like “mics, money for set props, and all other things that cost a lot of money,” says Avery. She has enjoyed her time in Theatre Honor Society but her favorite part is “realizing [she] can make a difference.”

National Honor Society (NHS), sponsored by Ms. Nicole Flores and Ms. Martha Mulligan, was renewed this year too. The Northside chapter of NHS focuses on supporting the school and greater Chicago community.
In the first semester, the chapter assisted with running an open house event, organized a car wash, and held a two-week donation drive for The Love Fridge in which members donated food, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies to those in need. In the second semester, NHS plans on contributing to Freshman Welcome Night, Cubby Walk, and a large chapter service project.
When asked about qualities of NHS students, Ms. Flores says, “A school like Northside Prep that holds the pillars of NHS in high regard should have a chapter of National Honor Society. We revived the chapter to emphasize the importance of these pillars and allow like-minded students to gather and support each other and the community.”
NHS President Julia Kwiek mentions that in 2nd semester, she is excited for NHS’ presence at the freshman welcome night and registration night this spring. It’s great to for upperclassmen to share this opportunity as well as their favorite parts of Northside to pass down the excitement to the incoming freshman.

Another newer honor society, Northside’s English Honor Society (NEHS) chapter, was the first English Honor Society chapter in CPS as of January 2016. The purpose of NEHS is to volunteer in the library, make bookmarks, tutor during flexes, and support the English Department. For example, students maintain the bulletin board in the English wing and have organized a book drive in the past.
Academic Advisor Mr. Scott McCormick says that some qualities that make NEHS students stand out is having an interest in literature, writing, and theatre. His favorite thing about NEHS is getting to know students outside of the classroom and seeing the cool things that they want to do with service projects. For example, NEHS has tutored at Albany Park Library and sent letters and bookmarks to Cook County inmates in the past. Mr. McCormick noted that both these institutions were “very grateful.”
NEHS president Natalia Zupko notes that in 2nd semester, she’s looking forward to continuing the Pen pal program and continuing to display the hard work on the bulletin board and in various other ways.
