For upperclassmen, returning to school feels familiar and comes with new leadership roles in different clubs and sports. Juniors take on new roles and adventures, whether that be new AP classes or varsity sports, while seniors face the reality of their last year of high school.
“The first day of school feels bittersweet,” said senior Ellis Korda. “Freshman year, I was so nervous, but now I just look forward to seeing all my friends.”

Many seniors are expressing their first day of school as “bittersweet,” because this is their last first day of their high school experience. Upperclassmen were also excited to see their friends coming back to school.
“I got to see a lot of people I wasn’t able to see over the summer,” said Junior Chelsea Breen. She also brings up how her first day went so much better now that she’s so familiar with the environment and the people around her. She said how excited she was for homecoming and the beginning of cross country season.

Underclassmen, however, have a different perspective of their first day of school. They often come into the beginning of the school year with less certainty, unsure of where their classes are or who to sit with at lunch.
Sophomore Marissa Kaiya reflects on her experience as a freshman saying, “I was definitely really nervous because I didn’t have many friends going into the school year. And I wasn’t able to find my classes as easily, but now it’s much easier.”

Freshman year is push-pull for everyone, especially NCP students. They are making new friends, trying to figure out the block schedule, and learning how high school works. As freshman Justin Borgeous puts it, “[high school] is more independent for sure.” He was unsure if he would be able to find good friends and fit in well.

Despite differing perspectives about the first day of school, one feeling remains the same: a chance to do something new this school year.
For underclassmen, it’s discovering and getting to know the people they are going to spend the rest of their high school experience with.
For upperclassmen, it’s enjoying their last moments with their teachers and classmates while preparing for college and deadlines.
“I’m so excited to enjoy my last year here, but stressed about college applications and where I could end up around this time during next fall,” said senior Ellis Korda.
Whether a student is starting their high school journey, or if their time at Northside is coming to an end, each student enters the school year with their own goals and agendas in mind.
