On Friday, September 19, 2025, Northside teachers stood outside the school’s entrance before classes began, holding signs reading “You Are Welcome Here” in multiple languages.
According to Ms. Rose Taylor (Math Department), this show of support was part of a district-wide effort taking place across many Chicago Public Schools (CPS) called “Sidewalk Solidarity”.
In light of the increased presence of federal agents in Chicago, teachers have been gathering on Fridays to spread the message that all students are welcome. “The goal is to have it consistent for federal agents. So it is supposed to go on for however long the federal agents might be in Chicago,” Ms. Taylor said.
Ms. Taylor explained that the purpose of the signs was to illustrate the importance of student support during this time. “If there is anything we can do to make it more welcoming or make it less scary in scary times, we hope that you’re comfortable to come to your trusted adults, like your teachers, your counselor, your social worker…Use those resources at Northside – we are here for you.”
