As of mid-April, the spring sports seasons are reaching about their midway point, so the Hoofbeat decided to check in with a few underclassmen on two of Northside’s biggest girls’ sports programs. We talked to Sarinah Aman, a sophomore on the women’s JV soccer team, and Sabina Andersen, a sophomore on the women’s JV lacrosse team.
The women’s JV soccer team is 3-3-3, 1-0-1 in conference play, nine games into its season. It has one game this week, 4/23, at Northshore Country Day.
Sabina, you changed from playing soccer to lacrosse this year. What have been your first impressions of the lacrosse team?
“My first impression of the team was how nice and welcoming all the girls were! Everyone, including the coaching staff, made it very easy for me to adjust to starting a new sport.”
What has it been like changing from playing soccer to lacrosse as your spring sport?
“Changing from soccer to lacrosse wasn’t that big of a change for me, except that we have more games. Because of that, I feel like I’m getting more opportunities to get better.”

What are your goals for the remainder of the season–both personally and for your team?
“My goals for the season were to enjoy playing the sport and to bond with my team.”
The women’s JV lacrosse team has had a strong start to their season, with a ______ record. They have two games this week, 4/22 against Jones College Prep and 4/26 against Whitney Young.
Overall, how has this season gone for you personally? How do you think you have grown as a player and team member?
“Overall, I think I have greatly improved my field player skills. I have grown to love my team and enjoy celebrating our wins with them. My team has gotten so close, and we all really root for each other, even outside soccer.”
How has changing positions been? Last season, you were a goalie and now play center mid.
“Transitioning has been pretty good. Playing goalie was out of my comfort zone and new for me, as I previously played as a midfielder in elementary/middle school, but my Coach Andrew and [Varsity Captain] Angie Vasquez really helped me when I was learning how to be a goalie. Being a midfielder again has felt like a return to who I was when I was young, and I really enjoy it.”
How has it been helping new girls adjust to the team, while still being an underclassmen yourself?
“Helping the new girls on the team has been pretty fun. I love making new friends and talking to people, so it’s been interesting getting to know the freshman girls. I try my best to talk to everyone in practice and encourage my teammates so everyone feels included.”
The Northside JV lacrosse and soccer teams have about half their seasons left, including playoffs. Be sure to come out and support women’s sports on Northside’s home turf!
