The public perception of the 2024 Presidential election differed depending on the news outlet followed. With each election cycle, news stations tend to cover significant events including debates, conventions, and rallies. However, based on research conducted by Ad Fontes, the creators of “The Media Bias Chart,” news stations seem to have different alignments that are highlighted when comparing how they cover the same events. CNN and Fox News are two of the most prominent news stations with which we can compare these alignments.
Headline Comparisons
CNN had an article titled “Trump loyalists spew racist, vulgar attacks at Harris and Democrats at New York City rally,” and it focused on the insensitive “jokes” made at a Trump rally.
Regarding Harris’s Rally at the Ellipse, CNN reported, “Harris tries to paint contrast with Trump, arguing ‘it doesn’t have to be this way.’”
On the other hand, Fox titled its article on Trump’s rally “Trump, powerhouse guests rock packed MSG with historic rally,” focusing on the rally’s strength and power.
Fox reported, “Biden calls Trump supporters ‘garbage’ during the Harris campaign event as VP promises unity at the Ellipse rally” about the Harris rally.
News You Can Trust
While news is becoming widely accessible through social media and news apps, misinformation is also becoming more accessible. Anyone can post “news” on Instagram or TikTok, and it gets popular. “On social media, news is entertainment,” and this shift has caused people to spread false information in attempts to go viral. There isn’t any fact-checking, and if not careful, you can fall into the trap of fake news.
Thirty-six percent of Northside students thought the news contained untrustworthy information, and 39% thought it was difficult to determine what was true.
When forming opinions regarding the news, exploring different sources and doing your own research can help you gain a clearer picture of what’s actually happening!
