Almost everyone has heard of senioritis when referring to someone’s last year in high school or college. It’s the lack of motivation a Senior will feel towards the end of the year because they are soon to graduate. Senioritis may just be doing the bare minimum of work, not prioritizing homework, or, in extreme cases, giving up on grades, skipping classes, and not completing school work. Northside College Prep is an academically competitive environment where many students really value good grades, so has Senioritis affected the class of 24’?
Survey:
To determine whether Northside students find their motivation affects their daily school life, NCP Hoofbeat conducted a survey.
A question asking students to rate their level of motivation on a scale appears to find that most Northside students are still relatively motivated as the end of the year approaches.
Additionally, when asked how their level of motivation may impact their attendance in school, the majority of students said it may sometimes have an impact. Three respondents shared that their attendance is often or always impacted.
Respondents’ motivation seems to impact their ability to complete homework. The majority of students share that their motivation may sometimes impact their completion of homework assignments. The next most popular answer is that it can affect their homework habits very often or all of the time.
Finally, it seems that the excitement for the end of the year impacts some of our students’ motivation. Seniors could feel motivated, knowing they are almost done with high school.
There seems to be a common theme: Northside’s seniors feel that their motivation, or lack thereof, sometimes impacts their school days. This may affect their motivation to do work outside of school more than anything else.
We asked seniors to share some ways they stay motivated. Students shared:
- Spending time with friends.
- Looking forward to senior activities.
- Keeping grades up to end off strong.
- Looking forward to the next chapter.
NCP Hoofbeat reached out to Ms. Vaia, one of Northside’s counselors, to see if she could offer some advice. Ms. Vaia shared, “I do believe in senioritis. To me, it’s mostly students feeling burnt out. I think it can also be a combination of students feeling really excited about the next chapter, so you’re done with high school, finished applications, and are ready to move forward.”
While it seems that most of our seniors are still relatively motivated at the end of the year, Ms. Vaia was able to offer some helpful advice: “Utilize the counselors” and “Do something that you love.”
