Northside Prep’s spring musical “Mamma Mia” opens on Thursday, February 15th. We had the opportunity to interview Santi Vera, who is performing as the groom, to share his insights on the play.
Q: What is the musical called? What is it about?
A: It’s called Mamma Mia. We’re in Greece. There are three possible dads. They all get invited to a wedding but they don’t know it’s their daughter’s wedding. The mom, Donna, is trying to figure out who the real dad is. It’s focused entirely around ABBA songs and so they wrote a musical intertwining them all in.
Q: What are you most excited about for the performance?
A: Everybody singing along … Seeing family members and friends coming out to watch us. It’s a side [of me] that [my] family doesn’t usually see.
Q: What made you want to join the musical?
A: I did theater at my old elementary school so I just kept going here [at Northside], and I did the play the first couple of years, and so you get to know all the people… it’s just a fun time.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of being in the musical?
A: Probably public speaking, I am not super extroverted, so this is a way I can speak publicly. Outside of school, I would never sign up for something like this … [but] it’s a way to express yourself in a way you wouldn’t normally do.
Q: Would you recommend this experience to other students?
A: Absolutely yeah, even if you’re not the biggest fan of musicals, it’s such a fun time. It also helps with public speaking.
Q: If there were three words you could use to get people to come out and watch the show, what would they be?
A: Talented, breathtaking, wild.
