As Earth Day approaches each year, students can reflect on their connection to the planet and take action to protect it for generations to come. Whether through planting trees, cleaning up litter, or participating in educational events, every effort counts toward building a healthier and more sustainable future.
At Northside, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd. It’s a time when people worldwide come together to think about the Earth and how we can take care of it. Earth Day is especially important for students because it gives them a chance to learn about the environment and how our actions can make a difference.
“I think Earth Day means celebrating the earth for all the resources we use on a daily basis, and how its existence has helped us thrive,” said Gavin Mitchell (Adv. 601). “Especially, Earth Day is important because it brings awareness to how we and the generations before us have been abusing it for our own means.”
Some students even planted gardens in honor of Earth Day.
“I planted a beautiful garden with lots of native plants and a tree,” said Aaliyah Suk (Adv. 405).
Many students participate in Earth Day by joining in on activities like trash pick-ups on sidewalks around the city.
“To celebrate Earth Day, I participate in activities such as trash pick-ups outside schools and buildings,” shared Ellyse Wiechert (Adv. 501).
Earth Day activities like trash pick-ups and planting gardens not only help improve the environment but also raise awareness among students about the importance of taking care of our planet.
Through these hands-on activities, students learn about the consequences of pollution and the importance of reducing waste.
Earth Day is especially important to environmentally friendly clubs like the Environmental Club.
Claire Dawson (Adv. 502), President of Environmental Club, shared some of their insight on Earth Day and student participation, “I believe every person has a key role in addressing the climate crisis. No matter who you are, what privileges you have, or how big your individual climate footprint is, we all have a choice to take a stance and make change toward the issue.”
In this way, Earth Day activities encourage environmental consciousness and empower students to become advocates for the planet.
